Cucumber Raita (Cucumber & Yogurt Dipping Sauce)
This condiment goes spectacularly well with spicy chicken dishes, and is commonly served at many Indian restaurants. This recipe only takes 5 minutes to make.
Ingredients
- 1 large cucumber, peeled and grated, juices squeezed out
- 1.5 cups plain Greek yogurt (high fat, 2-5%)
- Juice of ½ lemon, zest of 1 lemon
- ½ tsp whole cumin seeds, toasted
- ½ tsp garam masala spice powder
- 1-2 tsp salt, to taste
Instructions
- Peel and grate the cucumber.
- Squeeze out the remaining juices from the pulp, discarding the liquid that is squeezed out but reserving the pulp.
- Mix the cucumber pulp with the Greek yogurt, lemon juice, lemon zest, toasted cumin seeds, garam masala, and salt to taste.
- Serve Cold.
Notes
This condiment can be tailored to whatever dish you are serving. If you are serving a chicken dish with lemon, capers, and black pepper, try incorporating some lemon zest, minced capers, and freshly-ground black pepper into the Raita!
If you like adding small diced chunks of salted cucumber to this sauce, feel free. I recommend salting the diced cucumber in advance and allowing them to drain to remove some of the excess moisture and flavor the cucumbers.
