In my twenties, working at this fairly divey bar, our staff drank a lot of Old Overholt rye whiskey. I think it was because it was cheap, and very decent quality for a rye whiskey given the price point. The flavors of the whiskey in this cocktail make me think back to those days spent having way too much fun while working in that dark, dingy, basement location.

Bitter Rye

In my twenties, working at this fairly divey bar, our staff drank a lot of Old Overholt rye whiskey. I think it was because it was cheap, and very decent quality for a rye whiskey given the price point. The flavors of the whiskey in this cocktail make me think back to those days spent having way too much fun while working in that dark, dingy, basement location.
The recipe below makes one cocktail.

Ingredients

  • 1.75 oz Old Overholt Rye Whiskey
  • ½ oz Angostura bitters
  • ½ oz sweet vermouth of choice
  • ¾ oz simple syrup
  • ¾ oz lime juice
  • 3 oz Ginger ale

Instructions

  • Add ice to rocks glass.
  • Add ingredients on top of ice.
  • Stir and enjoy.

Notes

If you enjoy whiskey or bourbon but haven’t tried rye, try making a couple of your favorite whiskey cocktails and switch out your favorite whiskey for a decent rye. One could argue that rye whiskey has even more depth of flavor than your average whiskey.
